This Is Enough

Ok this is enough, for a few months now, the Music Publishers’ Association or “MPA” have been taking down guitar tab and lyric websites. David Israelite, president of the National Music Publishers’ Association, expressed his so-called “concerns” by saying: “Unauthorised use of lyrics and tablature deprives the songwriter of the ability to make a living, and is no different than stealing…” This is insane. Since when has it been illegal for musicians to learn to play each other’s songs?

Another issue that hits pretty close to home with me is that of a piece of software called “PearLyrics.” All this software did was allow you to easily search for song lyrics for whatever song you were currently playing on your computer or any song you wish really. But the higher-ups somehow confused this with violating some sort of law and had the small programmer behind PearLyrics shut down. Keep in mind that all the program did was search websites that were already on the internet and give that information to the user in a readable, manageable way.

A Warner Chappell statement said the company wanted to ensure songwriters were “fairly compensated for their works and that legitimate sites with accurate lyrics are not undermined by unlicensed sites”.

Organizations like Warner Chappell and the MPA have pushed this too far. They have taken a simple battle for monetary profit off artistic works and turned into a global war against information freedom. If we, the netizens, music nerds, and users of the internet allow this type of thing to go on any longer, we will be facing a situation no different then when you tried to wear you favorite t-shirt with the words “BUCK FUSH” on it into your 9th grade science class and were promptly asked to leave. The internet is freedom, that has always been its purpose and idea. That we, the people of the world, could control how and when we get information. I’m almost amazed when I hear stories like this of small companies and websites that work REALLY hard to provide quality content getting shut down because some corporate figure head decided it would make him look good. These types of sites are NOT the reason your industry is losing money. The reason you’re losing money is because you’re spending all of your time trying to stop the inevitable.

That\’s it … I\’m not buying music anymore. I steal from here on in.

    Bunch of bastards …

  2. 2 Elijah Blue

I agree. The media businesses are trying to figure out how to co-opt the internet as altnerate distribution. They see projections of iTune’s selling over billion songs in 2006 and think: Damn.. we need to get control of this ‘internet’thing…. And they will! IF we stand by and do nothing. I’m with Lorenzo about not buying music.. I’m done with that… I’m going with indie/unsigned musicians only from now on.. but I’ll pay THEM.. directly. No more ’signed’ bands for me.

  3. 3 XthreeXstrikesX

“Every Time a Tabs Played an Artist loses it’s Money” this is sull bhit (change letters) I never understood the mp3 sharing thing and now they pull this crap. Now I cant even learn to play my favorite fu(king songs.
P.S. I think Mxtabs.net(the one I use to use) is a victim of these MPA jackass’s

  4. 4 matt

screw these bastards, time for large groups of friends to invest in a high speed server on a colo and only let friends in on the username and passwords again. Time to get back to old school ssl ftp servers.

  5. 5 Mike

I’d still like a formal response from the MPA and/or Warner Chappell directly about how lyric websites are taking profit away from artists, and would love for one of these sites to take them to court over it.

  6. 6 Brandon Speck

Yeah, those power hungry bastards need to be stopped.
Along with the MPAA treating my moviegoing experience like a scene out of “1984″, I continue to download my music and not support the money grubbing whores that they are.

  7. 7 yoyo

this is rubbish mxtabs was the best

  8. 8 Wade

I look forward to the day when someone goes after MPAA and RIAA with civil/criminal charges under RICO. MPAA and RIAA are planting the seeds for a juicy RICO.

  9. 9 James

If these guys keep it up, they’re gonna get themselves screwed. These are a bunch of top level execs who have pretty much no technological experiences. By shutting down guitar tab sites, they’re only HURTING the bands, not helping.

Think of it like this: A cover band wants to play a song by a “signed” band. They go to search for guitar tabs for it, but can’t find any, so they don’t play it. If they were able to find the tabs for that specific song, they would have been promoting it by playing it. Someone who wouldn’t necessarily have heard the song could have found it to be pretty catchy, and they’d go out and buy the album.

So there, these dang MPA exec’s are just screwing themselves. *shakes head*… morons.

  10. 10 Jason

    You should stripslash() your comments.

  11. 11 Jason

    Lorenzo Says:
“That\’s it … I\’m not buying music anymore. I steal from here on in.

    Bunch of bastards …”

    - Agreed.

  12. 12 J

I agree, I no longer buy anything from the a**clowns. I love the tab sites and this is just another reason for me to shun the whole industry. If there ever comes a time that we can apply payback that hurts them I’m in.

  13. 13 JP

omg…MxTabs.net is gone….this is a bunch of crap, is the MPA even consulting with the musicians? Or are they just assuming that they dont want people trying to learn their songs?

    this is bull

  14. 14 adam

i believe file sharing may be the only answer to this. localised servers are too easy a target for this. a secure (no chance of being sued!) system that would allow people to share tabs is www.hamachi.cc, i think everyone should check this out.

  15. 15 Kyle

So… when does the MPA go after guitar teachers who figure out popular songs and give them to their students?

This is so jacked it ain’t funny. Even as a newbie guitarist, the few times I asked a band where I could get tabulature, they all said “go to mxtabs.net”

Congrats MPA, you listen to your artists horribly.

  16. 16 Micah Fitch

Why don’t you guys just learn the songs by ear? They will sound better that way anyway.

  17. 17 agog

Astonished at just how little you cats understand about copyright laws.

  18. 18 Joe

This is the last straw! The Industry cant stand that they no longer have the ability to control what we do. Tablature is not stealing music!!! Sure I can figure it out by ear, but sometimes the tab helps for those rough spots. What’s the difference if I learn it by ear or from Tab? The end result is still the same (me being able to play the song). If that’s the case then they better start going after every garage band in the world that plays cover songs for fun.

  19. 19 ajs

any chance this stuff is still on the wayback machine or a google cache?

    agree 100% with old-fashioned ftp/sftp, and
snail cds. (anyone need a cdr with 10 real
books, scanned by guys at berklee?)

  20. 20 JimCroce

Stupid. Over half the music I buy is just so I can learn how to play it. No sense buying anymore. What’s next? Shutting down live performances? Attacking amateur musicians in thier living rooms? Damn, why not just make guitar possession illegal while you’re at it?

Hopefully people will start putting up torrents of their archived tabs. Please. Anyone.

  21. 21 Kevin

I just sent an email to the MPA. It won’t help but at least it will make them aware that people don’t like this..

  22. 22 rob

i think that they are being overly aggressive as well. but, all in all. the lyrics and tabs are protected by copywright as well. Go in to any music or music instrument store an dyou will see Books for sale of Lyrics and Tabs.
its been that way for a long long time.
I remember back in the late 70’s early 80’s when i used to shop in places like that, they all had Signs on the Book racks Saying that NO Sheet Music may be returned.
Because, get this. people used to use a copy machine that was called a Xerox machine. to copy the music then people would return the sheet music for the refund.
LOL. you see, thats where all this comes from

  23. 23 Andras Donaszi

Wonder when they gonna sue me for whistling songs… idiots.

  24. 24 JimCroce

A listener’s interpretation of what tab sounds most like a given song is NOT copyrighted material.

  25. 25 Billy D

I would like to see a full boycott of all major commerical music labels, their is tons a great independent music out there that is far better. With a very few exceptions.

  26. 26 Roomba

This is crazy!!! I learned a few songs this way, I’m no expert out in the bars, just some guy having fun with the old 6 string. Wait untell instrament makers start to loose sales as no one has any thing that you can play legaly at home for fun. So why buy the instrament any way.

  27. 27 Ariez

Like many of you, I swore to stop downloading music over a year ago, around the time that the RIAA lawsuits really picked up.

Songs I’ve bought since then: ZERO!!!

Songs I’ve aquired since then and still own (either burned or on my HD): well over 10,000

Amount I’m likely to be “sued” (aka settled) for: a hell of a lot less than acually buying all that crap.

A toast! To not giving two craps what the law says!

  28. 28 Kevin Levy

That’s it… I’m NEVER buying (F)ony CDs or products again. Companies like this are ruining the music industry.

  29. 29 Azawrath

First off Not buying Signed bands albums will NOT fix the problem, Why make the bands suffer by not giving them money when that is their only living, What should be done however is someone to simply take the matter to court , it would be a easy victory , Its words , Not money, Lyrics should be free , Tabs should be free. But not buying some ones album because they are signed shows rash mental judgement and more or less a small knowledge of the music industry. If everyone stopped buying records the music industry would collapse and then you’d have no one MAKING Albums for you to steal. What would you do then?

  30. 30 Dino

    >If everyone stopped buying records the music industry would collapse and then you’d have no one MAKING Albums for you to steal. What would you do then?

Go to the band’s website, where they would have a store, or an agreement with a music service like iTunes etc, to sell their songs. Artist’s take = 100% minus cost of online. Music labels would be irrelevant.

Not buying signed bands doesn’t make sense. If you like the band then buy their music. Piracy isn’t the solution; that’ll come when bands wrap up their contacts with major labels and say “You know what? We’re not re-signing with you. Our fans can find us online. Say buh-bye to the stockholders for us.”

  31. 31 Matt

I’m sick of this. As a guitar player I find this VERY angering. It will be a cold day in hell before they take down all. What about the artists? Popular bands are going to loose an un-imaginable amount of money over this, people are just not going to bother because of the threats from the sad and stupid corporate money-grubbing pigs.

  32. 32 Ryan

I will keep tabbing out songs & playing music. FTW!!

  33. 33 zarloniusrex

    In reply to Azawrath -

Firstly not buying signed bands albums doesn’t make a difference really, from the money that is produced by record sales a PITIFUL amount goes to the artists themselves, especially if they are smaller or more ‘independent’ artists. The best way to support these artists is to buy merchandise, come out and represent at shows etc. This is how the recording industries bullsh(ts people into believing that the artists will suffer if we don’t continue to purchase music - LIES! Recording Industry Associations would crumble and fall to the ground (or possibly not something quite so drastic, ha) , leaving formerly powerful and wealthy executives with not quite so much to pad their pockets.

  34. 34 vic

Artist should be publishing and distributing their material on the net, and cut these middlemen right out of the picture. there does not seem to be enough profit for these companies to satisfy them. how can up and coming young people wanting to become musican going to learn and play music if they can not even search for it on the web.
searching for contant does not mean not paying for it!!!!!!!!!!

  35. 35 a musician

“how can up and coming young people wanting to become musican going to learn and play music if they can not even search for it on the web.”

    1. they could buy the sheet music, or
    2. they could buy the recording and figure it out by ear, which will teach you more in the long run.

I agree with you that artists should self-publish and self-distribute now. Perhaps they could even put out authorized tabs online.

  36. 36 david owen

Just say no. Make your own music. Get instruments. Take care of them. Experiment.
Invent new musics and new sounds. You don’t need the music industry. You have an imagination. Your head and heart are full of music. Infinite dimensionalities are full of music. The music business is insignificant.

  37. 37 John C. Dvorak

This is an excellent and compelling post. You rock! Combined with the comments, this summarizes the real feelings of the once loyal customers.

  38. 38 Tom

In all fairness, you are supposed to buy the lyrics and tabs from the band or whoever sells it. Sam Goody has ‘em.
-But I still am going to download music BI*CHES(the MPA)
I hope this nonsense stops, I just got a guitar myself.

  39. 39 Justin

How do they know that all the Tabs on a particular site are copied out of some tab book. I would say that the majority have been worked out by musicians wanting to play their latest favourite, because a far proportion of them are wrong anyway. I think that most bandswould think that people trying to play their stuff is really the highest adullation they could get. MPA you’re bunch of cvnts, and you’re running scared

  40. 40 Josh(bluefuse)

Might as well give up on the internet…times are a changing…free isn’t free anymore

  41. 41 Mr. Khmerang

Glad that I’m not alone… the most stupid decision ever. We are heading for illegalizing all internet publishing.

  42. 42 Steve Kay

Use Freenet. Anoymous, encrypted, and distributed, no central servers to take down, built in mechanism to resist flooding with fake files. If you want to smack the RIAA and MPAA back, get, use, and promote Freenet.

  43. 43 413x

@Tom: This is ridiculous. Where exactly am I able to buy Tabs and Lyrics? First there are a lot of artists and songs without songbooks and second there are the overpriced ones which are somethimes more expensive than the CDs itself. Music is a part of culture. And a few corporations and lawmakers just can’t stand this. The only culture they know, is money.

  44. 44 runlevel0

These types of sites are NOT the reason your industry is losing money.

AFAIK the music industry is not loosing any money at all since at least 2-3 years ago and in the USA.

  45. 45 MusicIsMyLIFE

I live off music, almost literally. I cannot stand having music playing at some point, but as i dont have the money to buy CDs i download all my music, or get it off friends. I can understand them getting down on COMPANIES downloading masses of music and then selling it as their own. But individuals downloading music is acceptable. THIS however, is beyond riDICULOUS! Do they have any idea how much money it costs to buy a sheet music book? And thats just for the mainstream bands! What about those of us wanting to play Cradle of Filth? Or Murderdolls, or Wednesday 13? We’re screwed! And those that cant READ sheet music? Nuh…this has got to be the stupidest thing i have heard since John Howard said that we dont have a race problem in Australia. Lyrics cant be bought, and nor can tabs. According to the ARIAs, artists are only losing 4% of their sales per year due to downloading of their music. They dont lose ANY from looking up tabs and lyrics on the internet!

  46. 46 Jeff

How long will it be before karaoke is outlawed? Without paying for the rights to read the words or drunkenly follow the bouncing ball, aren’t we all criminals?

  47. 47 fohf

Most of those tabs online are created by musicians who learned it themselves by ear and wrote it down. They didn’t copy it from a copyright tab book and they don’t claim to have written the songs. Most importantly, they don’t get any money for having taken the time to tab the songs out. There is no copyright infringement. It’s just for the love of the songs which they have already purchased.

  48. 48 Astrocreep137

It’s funny how they get all the websites shut down because the artist is losing money, but they’re not exactly busting their asses to provide their own legitimate, licensed sites that the artist would benefit from to replace them. I mean, obviously there’s a need/want for these sites and so much so that the RIAA & MPA see’s them as a threat.

Once again, going after the wrong business model the wrong way. YAY for the RIAA & MPA having a clue! YAY!!!!

  49. 49 chris

this is ridiculous…whats next…youll have to pay a toilet manafacturer to be allowed to piss and crap in your own toilet -_-

  50. 50 chr0naut

Why don’t they go out to sue unoriginal and deivative copiers who make millions off genuine artists work. I’m thinking Madonna with her current Abba rip-off. Of course the RIAA get a cut of it so it suddenly isn’t piracy. Pity the poor kid who makes 2 or 3 copies and gets busted. My guess is they’ll go after “tribute” bands next. By the way, downloading is not against the law. Broadcast or distribution is. The RIAA better watch out when people wake up that the law is NOT on their side.

  51. 51 Deep Pockets

The quickest why to get your point across is to hit them in the pocket. No buying of songs, makes for a miserable corporate exec. Low number means resume generating moment for the key execs. Want to make a difference, Don’t give them the money.

No sense bitching any further it’s either do or don’t. Your call- actions speak louder then words.

  52. 52 Stephen

I think you should suck my cock, then re consider what the MPA or RIAA should do.

  53. 53 zerovirus34

holy crap man…this is where the MPA and the RIAA and DRM crap has gone far enough, you guys need to knock it the fuck off!!!! Stop pissing on everyone so you can make your extra million!!!!

  54. 54 Some Dude

we should start a ‘’counter attack'’ …seriously…i mean…we should start bringing the sites we love back in some way…((for example…uploading a new site with the same $#iT only the name changes)) and we should find a way ((with the help of our hacker friends)) to shut down the MPA, MPAA, and RIAA and any other motherfcker who gets in the way and see how THEY like it!

  55. 55 GaMeWiZo

    AMEN to that!

  56. 56 Some Dude

BESIDES…isn’t the internet like international waters or something…to me its basically the same thing…its OURS not theirs!…why should THEIR law be followed by US?!…should be the other way AROUND…the internet is OURS…we make it what it is right now…not them…and its OUR rules the ones that apply in OUR world…

  57. 57 Some Dude

and I do agree with the ‘’stop buying music'’…the problem: wont only affect the bad guys…but it’ll also afect the bands we love, the musicians…all those guys we want to keep on makin music will probably stop…cuz there’s no money for production …so they and US will also be affected with this ’solution’
we are in a huge DILEMA right here…and we need to find a way to work together and solve this once and for all…DOWN WITH THE MPA, MPAA & RIAA!

  58. 58 Some Dude

sooon…just soon enough…i’ll have to pay some government agent to sing in the fckng shower cuz it’ll be ‘’illegal'’ or categorized as ‘’piracy'’ if i dont give them money for using lyrics…

  59. 59 Some Dude

i’ll get busted on the toilet for playing a song on the guitar thats not mine…that I didn’t write….
they’ve gone TOO far this time…

  60. 60 {CB}Marsupial

I think my favorite point in this whole debate comes from the people saying that tab sites are infringing copyright because tabs are available in published formats.

I’m sure that most people who hear one song that they want to learn will run out and blow $15-$20 on a book for the whole damn album that it’s from. Brilliant.

I know there’s individual stuff out there, but it’s usually classical piano stuff…

  61. 61 Chuck u Farley

does anyone remember when the albums had lyrics on the dust jacket of the record?
the best way the musicians could distribute the lyrics(and tab too for that matter) would be to include it with the cd and then make it wort while for consumers to buy again instead of just downloading,
i still think the music industry is too bossy and im not buying(or downloading) until something gives.
i guess next we will have to pay a piracy surcharge when we buy guitar strings.
or not be able to buy them because we might play a copyrighted tune (whoops i better shut up before i give mr sony an idea)

  62. 62 Matt Paradisi

THANK YOU DAVID OWEN. Honestly, I’ve tried learning songs with tab, but about 5 minutes into it i end up changing the rif about 24 times until its not even close and its more my style. Shouldnt rock and roll be about the progression (and maybe a lil tribute to the past)? Seriously, 90% of the music out now is F’ing terrible at best. Whiney punk DoucheBags and stiff-wristed guitarists bangin’ out power chords while their drummer does all the work. I honestly cant stand it. It’s really time for a new old sound, and your not going to find it by memorizing tablature. You might, however, get laid if you learn a Sh1tty john mayer song or something; but if you’re really rock and roll you won’t have to.

  63. 63 Jacalyn Maria

This is really crap! Everytime I hear a good new or even old song the first thing I do is look up the lyrics. As a poet and lyrical writer myself, I think I would rather people have the ability to veiw my lyrics in written text. I believe it helps people to see beyond the lyrics to the deeper meaning. What They should be trying to do is weed out the sites that have screwed up/altered or misinterpreted the actual lyrics. Thats more crap!

  64. 64 Jacalyn Maria

oh and im with SOME DUDE on the whole hacker firewall thing. They keep us out why cant we keep them out THATS BRILLIANT!!

  65. 65 Jacalyn Maria

DOES THIS MARK THE END OF COVER BANDS?

  66. 66 sid

what bastards! stupid people :/ i don’t have words… we re-want mxtabs and our rights!

  67. 67 Schmitt

This is Insane. It has officially become that money si the supreme power in this country, and nothing else. Is it right to deny young guitars the right to play their favorite songs? Is it right to destroy the careers of Young band who admire and want to cover there songs but may not have the money themselves to do so? What happened to “It’s About the Music?” You played the instruments for fun, now you’ve been so consumed with your greed that you have become a sell out, everything you have hated and more. Bring back the tabs. Bring back the lyrics. If the internet is technically supposed to be “The Freedom of Sharing Information” … then whats this? Answer me that. You guys have taken censorship too far, and you will never be able to stop it. NEVER. There will always be ways around your corrupted silence, because the voice of the people is all that really matters now isnt it?

  68. 68 Nobody

I’m from chile, if the mpa shut down every site with tabs and lyrics I won’t be able to learn any song ’cause in my country the tabbooks aren’t available. and I cant buy them on the web ’cause I don’t have credit cards or something to pay them. if they shut down all these sites the entire world will be afected.
    this is really bad.

  69. 69 DR. SATAN

    Those commi bastards……
This is the gayest fu**ing thing since napster. MPA is fu**ing gay. they suck fat hairy bawls. they can kiss the fattest part of my a** with their commi lips.

  70. 70 Proffessor Plump n Stuff

The MPA might as well come take the guitars from our blister-ridden wirey fingers. Tabs help you appreciate the artist more. MPA sucks and I agree with DR. SATAN…Call Me you big red steamy demon.

  71. 71 Feckers

    Absolute bullshnit…

  72. 72 Daniel

WTF!?! They shut down mxtabs, and now lyric sites are illegal? This is going to backfire, how can they not realize this. I was actually starting to buy music again, that’s over, no more. The only thing they understand is profit and their bottom dollar. Send them a message in the only language they understand, their money. Don’t give it to them. Share music. I can’t wait till someone goes after RIAA and MPAA.. I can’t wait….

  73. 73 tim

WTF??? Weezer posts FAN-Submitted tabs on its website, they going to shut it down too??

I hope they ALL FALL INTO WOODCHIPPERS. bastards

  74. 74 Paul

This is officially too far. They’ve declared war. I actually started buying music CDs again (even though I have iTunes) just to support artists. No more. I’m downloading everything for free. F-U MPA.

    I really hope someone starts a SaveMXTabs.net site too…

  75. 75 sean

    you go glenn cocoa!

  76. 76 Dave B

what a crock of shit, i cant believe this has happened, im not a rich man, i cant really afford tab books that is why i rely on tab that may not be 100% accurate but still helps me learn what i want to learn, and about depriving artist, i dont think the rollings stones, led zepplin, metallica, beatles and whoever has sold millions of albums is really stuggling that bad that they need to shut down a website such as mxtabs.net, maybe they should make a tab pay site, i would patronize, but face it, to wanna only learn one song from an artist and having to go out and buy an entire book for 24.95, us a waste of time and money, when u could pull that one simple tab from the net… so all these ass holes that took down the sites need to come up with either a tab paysite where i can purchase a sinlge tab or give us back or tab freedom, it is such ashame when the rich complain and need to get richer but taking away our rights!!! FUCK YOU CORPORATE ASS HOLES!!!!

  77. 77 joe

hey i was just wondering y this mxtabs.net was shut down i know u guys have your resons but that was an awsome site and most popular and it was a master paice of all the kids in america that can listen toa song and write music to help other kids to ply an insterment and be cool well if i could have u say somthin on this topic that would be awsome later

  78. 78 john

idn y u shut it down but u are gona get so many complants from millians of kids that are pissied off. i was lookin for a sertin tab yesterday and ther isint that many tab sites NOW and i needed it for a gig with i was gettin paid a lot of american money 4.and we hade to cansill because all my band members had to get ther music and no tab sites had wut we needed. and i no 4 a fack that mxtabs.net has that tab.now im late on my car payments to THANK U VERY MUCH

  79. 79 Matt Spencer

what a bunch of fucking crap, i buy cd’s i buy tab books i by the merchandise and they go and do this. ive never learnt to play guitar by chords and ive never had a guitar lesson but i now have an upcoming band who we believe can be quite big and this is all thanks to guitar tabs. i dont think they realise just how many peoples guitar playing lives there fucking up. this is insane i agree with the guys on here and im gunna show them just what stealing is.

  80. 80 lenny

well i suppose the next time im in a bar to hear a local band, the cops or feds will come in and shut the power off or arrest the owner untill he, or the band come up with the royalties due to the artists of the songs being played.the other thing i am bothered by,is the fact that these tab sites are a free service.they make no money from the tabs.thier money comes from thier advertisments.dont punish the people who idolize the artists and wish to emulate thier heros.if you are a professional artist or musician and you agree with what is happening to these sites then you are not into the music for the art. you are a money grubbing moron like the execs you WORK for. what ever happened to stick it to the establishment? music for the love of music?i guess its just screw the fans unless the have a fistfull of cash.then when thats gone screw them anyway.

  81. 81 denimcatfish

Covering a band’s songs is technically promoting them… and what about lyrics and tabs to bands that are already gone or dead? Sheesh… fucktards…

Mxtabs should have never bowed down and taken it. these corporate losers scared them and they all have fallen for the bluff. In no way would unofficial educational material like guitar tabs be made illegal in any court of law. TABS ARE NOT ILLEGAL YET! fight back they are just blowing smoke and trying to frighten everyone. MX pussied out don’t do the same.

  83. 83 alex

mxtabs should put up their site on a server that is not in the US. you cant apply US copyright laws overseas

you can’t outlaw a person’s *interpretation* of a song, which is all a tab is basically…someone listened and interpreted a song one way and put it up for others to see…creative freedom.

  87. 87 RIAA are cunts

I used to buy CD’s in fact i bought over 800. I will be pirating every bit of music from now on and spending the money on concerts and band t-shirts.

  88. 88 Frankie

Last I checked this was America…the USA… MPA and RIAA I guess you don’t understand freedom to express. Music is an ART, don’t you understand… You’re KILLING it. Get your heads out of you know what!

  89. 89 Brett

EVERYONE HERE NEEDS TO SIGN THIS. POST ON OTHER SITES REGARDING THIS TOPIC!!! *******&*******———&——– http://www.petitiononline.com/mioti/petition.html ——–&———******&******

  90. 90 JJSkillZ

This is Bull. I mean it violates at least one part of the constatution and so what if the musicans arent being “fully componsated”. I believe they have been enough and the sites even help spread and understand songs.
My favotite tab site was Mxtabs.net and i was even a member but now its gone…

If you feel the same drop me a line at

  91. 91 Eric

This is really bullshit, I mean cmon people, these are just interpretations of songs by other people. It isnt considered stealing if it is our interpretation and they openly put the tabs they worked hard on, on the internet. Enough said…

  92. 92 Jay

This is a violation of 1st amendment rights. Freedom of speech. Tabs are our interpretation of songs. How the f*ck can someone say we can’t share them with others! Corporate America Must Die! Fight the Man!

  93. 93 JR

Someone should compile a Tab site, then when the MPA come knocking for it to be shut down, just give them a “No”.

How they can make what is essentially tealling someone how to play an instrument illegal, is beyond me. How they can make writing a series of numbers in a certain sequence illegal, is beyond me.

“It’s illegal to play music without paying for it” - is that what it’s become?

  94. 94 Solid Mixer

This is rediculous! I mean, who is making money off of it? Its just a resource for people to see how its done. I mean, I can understand how it is piracy for tabs, but lyrics?? Jeez, theres nothing wrong with posting lyrics!

  95. 95 nanenj

    We’ve taken care of everything
The words you hear the songs you sing
The pictures that give pleasure to your eyes
It’s one for all and all for one
    We work together common sons
Never need to wonder how or why

We are the priests of the temples of syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls
We are the priests of the temples of syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls

Rush - 2112, how funny and strangely appropriate.

  96. 96 Cameron

Tabs are a good thing it keeps fans interested in their music
    SCREW THAT IDEA!

  97. 97 Larry M

    I suppose that next we won’t be able to sing or hum a copyrighted song;
perhaps even if one pops into our heads, the Orwellian thought police
will come for us. OK, everyone listen up! No more learning to play
music by imitating other artists’ songs! No more “Smoke On The Water”
for you criminal people. You may only now play completely original works
    - or you will be in violation of a federal law maindated by lobbyists
through your “representatives” — all in your best interest, of course.

Dear Music Publisher’s Association, why not put your resources into
something positive, like lowering prices on the songbooks and sheet
music that you publish to affordable prices? Or how about this one -
developing educational software to go along with those ourtrageously
priced publications that would allow a composition to be heard and
played? The real reason the MPA is opposed to on-line tab sites is that
they don’t have their slimy, greedy palms in it. These people are
TAKING AWAY OUR RIGHTS! I’m quite convinced that they would like to
change the term “free speech” into something that they could profit
from. The MPA seems more to stand for Manipulative Purveyors of
    Anti-Americanism.

  98. 98 Qb_Master

This is stupid. I think that they shouldn’t put such a lockdown on our freedom of information. For god’s sake we’re not stealing music when we get some guitar tablatures or lyrics, and play/sing them. They have gone too far.

The other side to this is that if they shut down the sites, then people will start sharing the tablatures and lyrics by other means. They will start sharing them over p2p, online radio(maybe) and chat mediums. Any of these was not considered illegal by any means until these assholes came into play.

I have noticed that people who get their guitar tablatures online also seem to have a good number of guitar tab books as well. Before the RIAA issues, I used to buy cds - but not any more and I have plenty of the music I want (let’s just keep it at that ;D). It’d be the same thing. I guarantee that if this law becomes largely mainstream, I would NEVER buy a guitar tab book again, and further would download all of my guitar tabs illegally.

(Arrest me for playing a song on my guitar - or for that matter arrest me for singing it! I dare you MPA, I just dare you ;D).

  99. 99 Geo

It makes we wonder if the sound emulations that I’m downloading from the Line6 web site to my POD are legal. If I tab a song myself for my own use is that illegal? Is owning a guitar that is capable of being used in the tabbing process illegal? I would like to see everyone deluge the Music Industry Manufactures, Magazines, Press, and Artists with questions regarding the the legality of their products and how they can prove to use that they are protecting us from violating the law. For example, email Metallica and pressure the band to provide a public response to how they feel about the MPAA and the RIAA actions against the tabbing web sites. Ask Metallica if they ever tabbed or shared how to play another artists song, espcially before they were famous. Is the experience of a better player (or a teacher) showing a student how to play ‘Blackbird’ educational or illegal? We need to find out if Covering songs in a club is illegal also. What is and what is not legal? That is what we need to know. Send them all your emails. Let them know. Else you can subscribe to Guitar Player and download your 1 free song a month. The tab will be crap, and it won’t play back like PT, and you can’t print it - but that’s pretty much the industry alternative that seems to be available, sorry as it is.

  100. 100 lenny

the dude with the rush lyric nailed it right on the head.and muck fetallika that dumb ass ulrich is one of the mpa/riaa’s biggest fans. all of you guys/girls who thought that these guys were gods have them to blame.these morons are the ones who got this whole thing going in the first place.i will continue to play what i want and if i have to steal the tab to get me in the ballpark then so be it. if the people of this country werent such pussies this kind of thing would be laughable.but id be willing to bet that fully 2/3 of you who are whining didnt even vote in the last election. write to your elected officials and tell them.if the outcry is loud enough they will listen, or they wont get to play anymore.stand up for something or youll fall for anything.this should be totally obvious.

  101. 101 Geo

Lenny, you missed my point. Mailing politicians isn’t going to help any more then mailing the RIAA or the MPAA. Their bought and sold. We have to pressure the people that we buy our gear from. Buy from a pawn shop or a used record store if you have to refuel. Just do not buy new until we get some justice. When Fender, Peavy start to feel the boycott, I promise they will get on our side real quick. Their stockholders are listening. The RIAA is just a money sucking leach anyway and the pros know it. Hit the manufactures, then we’ll get a response.

  102. 102 chris

Fu(k all the a$$holes takin the tablature and lyrics off the net, they will see the real pcture soon enough.

  103. 103 stacey

that is so freaking retarded! i was learning how to play my guitar more from sites like that, since when is it illegal to learn songs that great artists and bands have made?!

  104. 104 rob

Oh if you guys want you can check out http://www.turn-it-up.net which is a new site with more than 25,000 tabs and lyrics. And a kick-ass community

  105. 105 Jay

I agree with the first guy.. from now on I steal all of my music.. fuck the MPA… mxtabs was my fav.. and by far the holy grail of tab sites.. ultimate guitar blows chunks compared to mxtabs… this is gd bs.. I am so pissed off.. where the fuck are we suppose to get tabs from guys?

  106. 106 MPA is my bitch

  108. 108 jane

if it wernt for tabs most of todays musicians would have never had practice in order to make it

  109. 109 Zippy_66

what the ƒuck is all this about?
THIS NOT NOT ƒUCKING STEALING ITS SHARING!
If the MPA think this is stealing, its like posting a recipe for a McCain chocolate cake! This is not stealing!
This is ƒucking retarded and musicians of the world know this.

    KEEP OUR TABS ALIVE!!

  110. 110 Ladderboy_124

I am so sick if this crap, i just bought a new 400 dollar guitar and now i can’t even look up my favorire tabs anymore, mxtabs was by far the best tab website on the net, screw those money hungry bast-ards

  111. 111 Ryan

Better watch out, If you buy the tab books and let one of your friends have a peek inside they will sue you. No looky looky for free!

  112. 112 paul

this is most deffinetly totally unfair. how can they expect people like me (ive been playing for bout a year ) to sit down and tab something out by ear i mean it would be ok if i listened to pretty simple music and all like the one who previously was talking about this wednesday the 13th and all that not-so-jazz but you try gettin me a steely dan tab book or a rory gallagher tab book or u try after playing for about a year sitting down and tabbing by ear some rory gallagher and some pink floyd and that and a lot of other bluesy stuff and as well as that if i could even manage to find all these tab books it would cost me so much money to buy them all the stupidity of it all. it means that i go to play guitar but end up just messin around and not gettin anybetter because i cant find the tab

  113. 113 Manuel M

This is a crazy thing, first of all nobody is stealing anythig, all tabs are written by people who listen music and try to give a personal point of view, besides that they share music with some other guys who likes music, this has nothing to do with making money it’s about play music… MPA should be worried about making best music not about stop people sharing music. Use your head to think, not your feet.

  114. 114 jmo7

I’m really bummed out now, but here’s what I think we could do… Just open the bastard back up, and when they come after just shut it down, change the web address and open it back up again… just keep repeating the process until they get tired of chasing… it would be even better if we could get someone outside of the US to do this… they would have a hell of a time trying to chase down a person halfway around the world…

This category contains both applets and components that can be used to play Flash video (.flv) in websites and Flash applications. Applets are XML-driven, and do not require the Flash authoring environment. Components, however, are designed for Flash developers, and must be installed using the Adobe Extension Manager. Most of these include demo files that you can download freely to see if these solutions are appropriate for you.

This IS ridiculous. The MPA will never be able to stop everyone from doing this. And if they think they have changed my opinion on getting tabs and music of the internet they are entirely mistaken. Anyone still looking for tabs can use ultimate-guitar.com or a torrent.
